A Filtering Element for Straining Impurities from Molten Metal
(Patent No.178060)
A filtering element for straining impurities from molten metal is designed and patented by Mr. H. D. Arjunwadkar a veteran foundryman practicing for more than 50 years.
PRODUCT
Filter Strainers designed for the filtration of ferrous and non ferrous metals with temperature upto 1450°C.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
The melting of metal leads to the generation of unwanted slag and non-metallic impurities (which are lighter than metals) enters into metal liquid stream and thus enters the castings. The unwanted inclusions cause casting defects which reduces casting quality in respect of mechanical properties, machinability and surface finish. These defects may lead to the castings being rejected and scrapped resulting in heavy losses to the foundryman.
The key to reduce rejection rates and produce sound and clean castings enabling to add PROFITS is the removal of unwanted inclusions before they reach the mould cavity

Filer Strainers offer a simple effective method of removing slag, dross and non-metallic inclusions promoting a smooth and clean metal flow without turbulence. No filtration area is wasted in use of this Filter Strainers in gating system.
ADVANTAGES
- Improves Soundness and Strength of Casting
- Improves Casting Quality
- Reduces Rejection Rates
- Higher Yield
- Better Surface Finish
- Saves Machining Cost
- Saves Match Plate Area
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
Filter Strainers are designed to withstand the rigours of molten metal during filtration. Their resistance to extreme thermal shocks has been proven in the foundry. A special refractory used to make the Filter Strainers has capacity and affinity to absorb and withhold impurities lighter than metal from the liquid passing through it. These Filter Strainers can be used for inmould S.G. Iron Practice.
